THE KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CROSSOVERS AND SUVS

November 15th, 2022 by
Both crossovers and SUVs are popular among locals, sharing many similarities that make them perfect for active families. Higher ground clearance gives drivers a better view of the road ahead, with roomy interiors to accommodate cargo and crew.

While some drivers use the terms interchangeably, there are some key differences between crossovers and SUVs. The most noteworthy involves the vehicles’ design and construction. Read on to learn more, and to find out which type of vehicle is the right fit for your family! Then, stop by Parks Chevrolet Huntersville for a test drive!

CROSSOVER BUILD AND DESIGN

A crossover vehicle’s unibody construction is similar to a full-size sedan’s, with the body and frame considered to be a single unit. Crossovers are also closer in size to a sedan, which is why they’re a popular pick of smaller families who don’t require the extra seating that a larger SUV provides.

Despite their unibody design, many crossovers boast the sporty exterior styling of an SUV. But while they may appear to be reminiscent of their larger siblings, crossovers are more practical for everyday, on-road driving.

Performance
Crossovers typically come with front-wheel drive, making them less equipped to tackle rough terrain. All-wheel drive may be available, depending on model, so be sure to ask a member of our sales staff.

Many small to mid-sized crossovers also come with turbocharged engines, often providing a peppier ride than bulkier SUVs. The downside is that crossovers are not made for towing, so if your weekend plans involve a boat or camper, you’ll need an SUV to haul it.

Fuel Economy
Because of their smaller size and lower weight, most crossovers boast a much better fuel efficiency than gas-powered SUVs.

SUV BUILD AND DESIGN

Due to their larger size and increased weight, SUVs feature a body-on-frame construction, with the body and frame as two separate pieces. The suspension and wheels are attached to the frame, with the engine resting on top. The body is then mounted to the frame, providing the durability needed for rugged, off-roading SUVs.

Built for bigger families, SUVs provide more space for passengers and all their gear. While compact SUVs do not, midsize SUVs and full-size models even feature roomy, third-row seating!

Performance
An SUV’s body-on-frame construction provides enhanced suspension for a smooth ride and the strength for towing and hauling – and venturing off the beaten path! These adventure-ready models come standard with beefier V6 or V8 engines, and often have 4×4 systems in place to handle even the toughest terrains.

Fuel Economy
You’ll have to pay for this more power-packed performance though, with SUVs not nearly as fuel efficient as crossovers.
